Current Calls

Dear Members of Mobile Communication,

We are currently soliciting nominations and self-nominations for the following positions for the Mobile Communication Division: (1) Secretary, (2) Early Career Representative, and (3) Internationalization Liaison. These opportunities are an excellent chance to expand your disciplinary service, shape the activities of our division and community, and help our division continue to thrive. The term of the all positions begins on the last day of the ICA Annual Conference in Cape Town, South Africa (2027) and is a two-year commitment.

Desired candidates for all positions are active members of the Mobile Communication Division. They need to be registered ICA members already for the upcoming term (2026-2027) when they submit their nomination materials. Candidates can ideally attend the business meetings at the ICA annual meetings 2027-2028 (2027 in Glasgow, Scotland, 2028 in Bangkok, Thailand) in person.

Description and Duties of the Secretary

The secretary is a central position in the division, helping to contribute to building the membership and the general position of mobile communication within the ICA. The secretary is part of Mobile Communication Division’s Executive Committee and involved in leadership decisions such as the recommendation of division members for ICA committees and awards. The secretary is also responsible for the communication channels of the division including the website and social media activities. The individual, along with other members of the Executive Committee, will be asked to attend sessions at the annual meeting to help work out logistical issues.

As stated in the ByLaws,

(c) The Secretary shall maintain, distribute, and obtain Section approval of minutes for Section business meetings; manage the Section space on the ICA website and other external communication; distribute messages via the Section listserv as appropriate; assist the Chair in administering business meetings; and participate with the Chair in evaluating the quality of Section programs.

The secretary position is an ideal position for scholars shortly after obtaining their PhD who are aiming to expand their disciplinary service activities and  to get involved with the Mobile Communication Division. The position provides the opportunity to shape the division’s direction and to gain visibility within the Mobile Communication community.

Early Career Representative

The Early Career Representative represents the Mobile Communication Division’s early career members within the leadership team. They are the point of contact for early career scholars who want to get involved with the division, organize events targeted for the interests of early career scholars and make sure that the interests of early career scholars are heard in the leadership team. The desired candidate is an early career researcher (pre-tenure) with research and/or teaching interests in mobile communication.

As stated in the ByLaws,

The Early Career Representative shall assist the Executive Committee with planning Section activities and initiatives, and shall seek new Section members especially among scholars at an early stage of their careers.

This is an ideal position for a Ph.D. candidate or post-doc. The Early Career Representative should help circulate calls for proposals and encourage prospective members. The individual will work with the Mobile Communication Executive Committee members to develop programming and consider new projects that will strengthen the division and build the scholarly community. The position offers the incumbent visibility and the opportunity to network. The individual, along with members of the Executive Committee, will be asked to attend sessions at the annual meeting to help work out logistical issues.

Internationalization Liaison

The internationalization Liaison represents the interests of the (future) members of the division who come from regions which are currently underrepresented within ICA. They are the point of contact for scholars from these regions who want to get involved with the division, organize events targeted for the interests of scholars from the Global South and other regions underrepresented at ICA and make sure that the interests of scholars from the Global South are considered in leadership decisions.

As stated in the ByLaws,

The Internationalization Liaison shall advise the Executive Committee on matters of geographical inclusivity, and shall seek new Section members especially in under-represented parts of the world.

Although Mobile Communication is one of the most global sections of ICA, the Internationalization Liaison is still important in a number of respects. Like nearly every other ICA unit, Mobile Communication would be well-served by more members from the Global South. It is also important to stimulate and highlight scholarship from/about these regions. The Internationalization Liaison, along with members of the Executive Committee, will be asked to attend sessions at the annual meeting to help work out logistical issues.
